Karla Poulton is General Manager, Operations for flexicommercial (part of humm group), a commercial asset finance company. Karla's teams are responsible for managing finance broker-originated transactions from application through to settlement. Over the last 2 years, Karla has been instrumental in turning flexicommercial from a relatively small leasing company to one of the leading non-bank asset financiers in the Australian market. Karla's key focus is on continuous process improvement to support the business in maintaining excellent broker relationships and customer service standards. Throughout her 20+ year career in financial services, Karla has spent the majority of that time in credit and risk roles, including senior roles at GE Capital and flexicommercial. She has also led teams in systems architecture and account management.

Flexicommercial has partnered with Women’s Commercial Finance Forum because much more needs to be done to address the large gender diversity gap in commercial finance. I’ve always had a strong interest and affinity with commercial finance, spending the last 10 years working in the industry in Australia, Canada, and the UK. What drives me is being able to work with brokers and partners to help businesses get the growth opportunities they need and deserve. I have a wealth of experience in commercial banking having worked at ANZ and Australian Finance Group (AFG) over the last thirteen years in various roles. My predominant experience has been centred around helping business owners access finance, from supermarkets, to start up’s. My last role at ANZ was leading a team of bankers who were transitioning from retail into commercial or brand new to the industry, so I understand the pain points a lot of brokers go through when starting their diversifying journey! I want to pay forward the knowledge I've gained from the people that helped me along the way. Message to members: Be curious about your client’s business, there is so much gold by just asking about what they do and what their goals are. Asking how you can help, may lead to an opportunity to fund that goal – no one wants debt, but they want to achieve their goals.

The benefits of diversity in a business are undeniable. Different perspectives, approaches and ideas allow a business to unlock their true potential.

“What do you want to be famous for?” A rhetorical question asked by a senior executive from my prior employer. A question that has resonated with me since.

If I was to answer that question today, I would say, I want to be famous for commercial lending. I want commercial lending to be as big as residential third parties. I want to see our brokers grow and I want to see business customers be the beneficiaries of a diversified industry.
